Understanding health research should be straightforward and accessible to everyone. To help explain some of the technical concepts and methods used throughout the Target Trials in Mental Health project, members of our Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) worked in partnership with The McPin Foundation to develop two video jargon busters.
The idea came from LEAP members, who wanted to create resources that explained complex concepts clearly and in plain English – something that other LEAP members like them could understand.
A dedicated jargon buster working group met monthly over the course of a year to co-design the videos. LEAP members shaped the initial ideas, developed and refined the messaging, and completed creative tasks between meetings. The group then worked with an external animator to bring their ideas to life, with LEAP members also helping to guide the animation style and providing the voiceovers.
Target Trial or Randomised Controlled Trial Jargon Buster
In this jargon buster, follow two characters through a retro game environment and discover how a target trial differs from other ways of addressing research questions, such as a randomised controlled trial (RCT). Learn about the benefits and challenges of each approach, along with a breakdown of key terminology.
Explaining widely used talking and digital therapies Jargon Buster
In this jargon buster, you will learn about different types of digital and talking therapies provided by the NHS. These therapies are compared in the Target Trials in Mental Health programme. You will also learn about real-world data and how this target trial aims to improve NHS care in the future.
